Common questions
What does a vascular surgeon treat?
A vascular surgeon treats diseases of the arteries and veins outside the heart and brain. At SCVA, that includes peripheral artery disease, varicose veins, carotid artery disease, aortic aneurysms and dissections, blockages of the arteries to your intestines and kidneys, dialysis access, non-healing wounds, thoracic outlet syndrome, pelvic congestion, and May-Thurner syndrome, using both minimally invasive procedures and open surgery.
When should I see a vascular surgeon for leg pain?
Consider seeing one if your legs hurt when you walk and feel better when you rest, if your feet or toes hurt at rest, or if a sore on your foot or leg won’t heal. These can be signs of peripheral artery disease. You should also see us if you’re young and athletic and get this kind of leg pain with exercise, even without peripheral artery disease. Problems such as popliteal artery entrapment or iliac artery endofibrosis can cause it.
How do I find the best vascular surgeon in Orange County?
Look for board certification in vascular surgery, experience with both minimally invasive procedures and open surgery, and a surgeon who explains all your options, including not having a procedure. All four SCVA surgeons are board-certified vascular surgeons who offer both approaches.
Do varicose veins always need a procedure?
No. Many people start with compression stockings and lifestyle changes. We educate you about all your options and will only perform an injection or ablation of your veins if you feel it’s right for you.
How is TCAR different from carotid endarterectomy?
TCAR places a stent in the carotid artery through a micro incision over the collarbone, while blood flow is temporarily reversed and filtered. Carotid endarterectomy is open surgery to remove the plaque. A vascular surgeon can help you decide which is right for you, or whether medical management is the better choice.

Our approach
The right treatment, not just the newest one.
-
Least invasive first
We typically begin with the least invasive option, and many treatments are done through a small puncture or in the office.
-
Open surgery when it’s better
Some problems are best treated with a traditional operation. We offer both, so we can recommend what’s right for you.
-
Care for life
We work closely with your primary care physician, and your care continues long after treatment.
